Acne Scars - Treatment Of Acne Scars
By Paul Rooney
Treatment of scars is as big a business as treatment itself, and because of all of the different products and services out there it is probably just as confusing to choose the one that is right for you and your skin. Also with all the marketing that goes on and everyone wanting a bit of your money they play on the emotions that come with wanting to eradicate scarring, so here we are going to try and help by explaining what some of the different treatments for scars are. Before we do that though, one thing to note is that before starting any scar removal treatment , your skin must be clear of fresh acne, so if that is not the case at present, make sure you have done so before you start your treatment. That said lets now look at some of the options available.
One of the treatments for scars that has been around for a while now is chemical peeling. Chemical peels as the name suggests, is a process where chemicals are placed on the scar area, and the peeled off. This in turn will allow new to skin grow and rise up from beneath the surface. There are several chemicals involved in this process such as trichloroacetic acid (TCA), alpha-hydroxy acids, including glycolic acid, phenol, salicylic acid, lactic acid, alpha-keto acids, tretinoin or retinoic acid, or resorcinol. If you do go for a chemical peel, after treatment you may find that your skin may turn red or swell for a few days.
Another method which has been around for a while is Dermabrasion. Dermabrasion can help to treat and heal deeper scar because of the way it gets deep down into the facial tissue, and this process can assist with improving scar visibility tremendously. Interestingly enough,

although dermabrasion is commonly thought to be a treatment done by a professional, there is a range of home dermabrasion treatments becoming more readily available on the market now, so not only will you be able to treat your scarring, but you wont be hit in the pocket as much at the same time.
Punch techniques are probably one of the lesser known ways of treating scars, and it is really for scars that are quite deep. Punch replacement or excision involves removing the pitted scar, followed by a skin graft or suture. Punch replacement is not for everyone, nor is it suitable for all scars, in fact it is probably aimed more at deep, wide depressed scars with fairly smooth bases. As an alternative to Punch replacement there is a technique called Punch elevation. This involves cutting the scar loose and allowing it to float up to the level of surrounding skin.
A final form of treatment is laser surgery. This is normally used if an scar measures more than 3 mm in radius. If it does then the scar can be treated by an application of laser energy which works to resolve irregular surface scarring. Laser energy is then allowed to deeply penetrate through laser pulses while tightening the underlying skin tissue. Laser treatments for scars are fast becoming the most popular treatment as not only is the treatment highly effective, but also it is not as damaging to the skin as a chemical peel potentially is, and another bonus over a peel is that you won't have red face for days after the treatment. Although laser treatments can be one of the more expensive forms of treatment, many sufferers swear that the long term results are definitely worth the price of the treatment.
